July 12, 2023 – The Evolution of our Psyches:  Sticky but Probably Unnecessary Emotions/Thoughts  (presenter:  John C. Simoneaux, Ph.D.)

Discuss how many common emotions/thoughts/behaviors may be archaic and, thus, maladaptive within a cognitive therapy framework.

Demonstrate how anger, jealousy, fear of “different,” violence, etc., underlie many social ills that can be ameliorated through cognitive reframing in therapy.

10:15 am – 12:15 pm

Explain and demonstrate how therapy techniques can help children and adults develop more adaptive thinking and behavioral strategies to combat outmoded premises.

July 12, 2023 – Culturally Sensitive:  Are You??  (presenter:  Keith Fox, Ph.D.)

Describe the importance of having a clear understanding of what cultural diversity is and what it is not, and how it affects people.

Demonstrate the need for a greater awareness and sensitivity to issues related to cultural diversity that go well beyond the assumed therapeutic relationship.

List examples of specific challenges when working with adults and children as related to cultural influences.

Explain how to bridge ethics and cultural diversity as a mental health professional.

Analyze and assess the evolution of male culture up to present day (including male culture in diverse populations).

Explain the impact of job, location, media, and religion on defining and understanding the influence of male culture on the larger society.

Describe the impact of male culture as it relates to generational differences.

Assess and utilize treatment options for minors and adults aimed at overcoming maladaptive behavioral and emotional patterns resulting from    the historically dominant male culture.

July 13, 2023 – Somatic Symptom Disorder:  Diagnosis and Treatment  (presenter: Byron Simoneaux, Ph.D.)

Explain extant research regarding somatic symptoms and related disorders for minors and adults

List and discuss the major federal and Louisiana statutes and regulations which directly apply to students generally and specifically to students who have disabilities in schools

Describe and compare the different “languages” we speak with regard to student functioning in various contexts

Explain the common goal of positive child/adolescent growth and how school/community provider disconnect can be deleterious

List strategies to enhance school/community communication for the benefit of our children

July 14, 2023 – Comparative Ethics:  What You Need to Know About Other Professions   (presenter: John C. Simoneaux, Ph.D.)

1:15 pm – 3:00 pm

Analyze and compare the ethical codes and guidelines of the major mental health professions, with attention paid to important differences.

Describe the manner in which a profession’s “culture” is communicated through codes of ethics and practice guidelines

3:00 pm – 3:15 pm – Break

3:15 pm – 4:30 pm

Explain how a comparative understanding of ethical codes assists in making appropriate referrals and deciding how to seek out needed consultation.

CE APPROVALS:  23 CE’s

Psychologists – Professional Training Resources is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for Psychologists.  Professional Training Resources maintains responsibility for the program and its content.

Licensed Professional Counselors – approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education activities for National Certified Counselors.  We adhere to the National Board for Certified Counselors Continuing Education Guidelines.

Social Workers – This program has been approved for 16 (clinical) , 4 (general) and 3 (ethical) continuing education contact hours by the National Association of Social Workers, Louisiana Chapter, as authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners, and may be applied toward the continuing education requirements for licensure renewal. Breakdown of hours:  Evolution of Psyches (4 clinical), Culturally Sensitive (4 clinical), Real Men Don’t Cry (4 clinical), Somatic System DO (4 clinical), Schools, Mental Health and Law (4 general) and Comparative Ethics (3 ethical).

Substance Abuse Counselors  – approved by the Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority for 23 clock hours.

NASP – Professional Training Resources is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists to offer continuing education for school psychologists.  Professional Training Resources maintains responsibility for the program.

Other Professions – may apply for education credits through their respective boards.  Everyone in attendance will receive a certificate of attendance.
